Trip Details:
Bryan and Chelsea Ireland joined a huge group of owners camping in Creede, Colorado for an Opus Owners Meet-up. They traveled from Denver directly to Creede – which is about a 6-hour drive with no delays.
“If you haven’t taken that drive you should, we passed by the Enchanted Rockies and Great Sand Dunes… the entire drive is pretty amazing. As much as we wanted to stop and explore… we had places to be.”
By the time we arrived, there were already almost 20 Opus owners with every different model!
Everyone had such interesting setups and systems it was a blast to watch all the different owners using their trailers – We learned so many tricks I would have never thought of before.
It was fascinating to see all the models with different accessories – I loved the fully enclosed Annexes owners had.
I’ve always loved the canopy but the Annex provided a ton of space when it rained for 24 hours straight… Creede is notorious for unpredictable weather.
The first day was nice weather and we spent some time exploring downtown Creede – They have some great shops and a delicious pizzeria.
You can also get your 3-day fishing license at the general store – which we did… and my husband caught at least 10 fish over the weekend. Because it’s right on the Rio Grande, there are streams and rivers all over, we would just pull over for him to fish off the main road.
The second day it rained, a lot. So we decided to take an offroad adventure through Bear Creek up to Kite Lake. What we thought was going to be a quick trip ended up taking about 8 hours – So be warned, it’s about 5 miles in and 5 miles out, in very sketchy conditions.
Kite Lake is a very small lake in the mountains between Leadville and Alma. We drove along Buckskin Road northwest of Alma, but there are also access points you can drive to, and then hike in.
As the rain picked up the road got slippery and difficult to navigate. I was safe in the backseat of Darin & Anne’s 4Runner (but I was holding on for dear life a few times).
One of the families in our caravan to Kite Lake hit a spot that sent his truck sliding pretty deep off the edge. Thankfully we had a bunch of experienced owners with us and they were able to winch him out.
Kite Lake was amazing. A few people drove their trucks to the other side of the lake, which is directly on top of a beautiful gravel pile.
There were a few people having trouble breathing due to the altitude. The elevation is more than 12,000 ft so bring some oxygen if you think you’ll need it.
On our final night, we actually went out to pizza, mainly due to the poor weather. It was a great trip – The fishing is fantastic along the Rio Grande.
