Things to know:

GETTING YOUR OPUS TO KODIAK ISLAND…

Getting to Kodiak requires reservations with the Alaska Marine Highway and is a 9-hour float from Homer abord the Tustumena ferry. It can support vehicles up to 40-feet in total length.

"Be flexible as the straight around the Barren Islands can be spoty. Delays are common, be prepared to cook a quick meal or two waiting at the ports. Once on the island you can explore the city of Kodiak which features several museums including natural sciences, native, maritime, colonial and military history. "

TRIP DETAILS:

EXPLORING BEAR COUNTRY

The Cardin Family spent 5 days/4 nights exploring the remote island of Kodiak with their OPUS Camper. Kodiak is rich in culture and history but is widely known for the famed Kodiak Brown Bear. Comparable in size to Polar Bears, the Kodiak Bear will weigh as much as 1,400lbs and have a population density of about 0.7 bears per square mile. Prior to modern colonial Russian and European settling, the native Alutiiq (Sugpiaq) people lived on Kodiak (Sun’aq) for 7000 years and have a very rich history. Modern-day Kodiak City was founded in 1792 as the nucleus for Russian fur trade. However, commercial fishing became the economic cornerstone and Tanner (Snow) Crab was first discovered and processed on Kodiak. Worth noting deep sea crab fishing in Alaska is statistically the most dangerous job in the United States.
